From teenage Goth to Copywriter:
how words became my superpower

I’ve been obsessed with words for as long as I can remember.

As a kid, I was the one scribbling stories at primary school while others were drawing pictures. During my teenage years, when most of my friends were saving pocket money for clothes, mine went straight to the newsagent for copies of NME, Melody Maker, and (yes, I’ll admit it) Smash Hits. My dream? To become a music journalist.

Picture this: a Goth teenager from Essex who somehow managed to love both The Cure and Wham! equally. I was probably the only person in the county sporting a Choose Life t-shirt with full black eyeliner and backcombed hair. Looking back, I think that mix of unexpected combinations has served me well in copywriting – I’ve never been afraid to blend different styles to create something that works.

About TAO Business Solutions

My grand entrance into the working world was as an 18-year-old office junior (after reluctantly toning down the Goth persona because, unsurprisingly, it wasn’t exactly employer-friendly in the late 80s). For the next 24 years, I worked my way up from junior to PA to office manager, zigzagging through what I like to call a “veritable smorgasbord” of industries.

Every role taught me something valuable about business, about people, and about communication. I learned how different industries speak to their customers, what makes businesses tick, and – most importantly – how the right words can make or break a deal.

But I always knew I was meant to be writing.

The Leap That Changed Everything

In 2012, at the age of 42, I took the most terrifying and exhilarating leap of my life: I started my own business. Those early days were a masterclass in learning on the job. Marketing myself? Nerve-wracking. Networking meetings? Absolutely petrifying. Invoicing clients? Let’s just say I had a very steep learning curve ahead of me. And that was before I even got to the actual writing work.

Would I change anything? Hell no.

Have the goalposts shifted since I started? You bet your life they have.

But here’s what hasn’t changed: my absolute commitment to helping businesses find their voice and share it with the world. Every challenge I’ve faced as a business owner makes me better at understanding what my clients are going through.

Life Beyond the Keyboard

When I’m not helping businesses find their perfect words, you’ll find me completely absorbed in the drama of Formula 1  (yes, I’m one of those people who shouts at the TV during races). Cricket matches can keep me glued to the screen for entire days, and I’m never happier than when I’m curled up with a good book.

The kitchen is my sanctuary – cooking is how I unwind, and I’m completely addicted to any foodie show on TV. My gin collection is getting slightly out of hand, but I prefer to think of it as “research” for potential client work in the spirits industry.

In 2021, I took a significant step toward full Crazy Cat Lady status by adopting Miss Daisy, a 10-year-old rescue who clearly knew she belonged in charge. She’s now the official Head of Wellbeing at Wordy Bird HQ, spending her days supervising my work from her prime sleeping spot right beside my desk.

The Promise I Make to Every Client

Every word I write for your business comes with the benefit of my entire journey – from that music-obsessed teenager to the business owner who understands exactly what it feels like to put yourself out there and hope people connect with your message.

I don’t just write copy. I help you find your voice, tell your story, and build the kind of connection with your customers that turns browsers into buyers and clients into champions.

Because at the end of the day, we’re all just people trying to connect with other people. And the right words? They make all the difference.

Ready to find your voice and share your story?

Starting a business at the age of 42 was absolutely terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time. Learning how to market myself, hold my own in networking meetings and keep on top of the delights of invoicing clients was the steepest of learning curves – and that was without the actual day to day stuff of looking after my clients.

Would I change anything? Hell no!

Have the goalposts shifted since I started in 2012? You bet your life they have!

When I’m not being a Social Media Superhero, you’ll find me enjoying the delights of MotoGP, F1 and cricket. I love a good book, and I have an ever-growing gin collection. I’m also a keen cook – utterly addicted to any foodie show on the TV – and every so often, I’ll indulge in my passion for baking. I still love music and going to gigs, although these days it’s the seated areas rather than standing room only.
